Jason & Tony completed their first race in the www.prestigemk.com sponsored Toyota MR2 at the weekend. The MSV Trackday Trophy race is a 45 minute endurance two driver race held at Silverstone on the National Circuit. Tony & Jason qualified second in class (for cars with under 125BHP per tonne). Tony took the first stint and made a good start gaining a number of places and at the end of the first lap was leading the class. He managed avoid a number of first lap accidents which saw a few cars in the gravel and with body damage. During his 22 minute stint he pulled out a 7 second lead from the second placed car before pulling into the pits for the driver change.
Driver changes must take a minimum of 1 minute 50 seconds. teams must time their own stop but the officials also time them. If you “short stop” you get a drive through penalty. Timing starts as the car enters the pit lane and stops as it exits. We had practiced our stops and thought we had it cracked. We timed our stop at 1 minute 54 seconds, perfect. The official timing for the stop was 1 minute 51 seconds. A close thing!
Jason went out for his stint and drove well in his first ever race, unfortunately a spin at Brooklands (which he almost caught!) while overtaking a slower car saw him loose first place. He continued on and finished in 2nd place. Unfortunately Tony had incurred a 5 second penalty during his stint for exceeding the track limits. Crossing the white line on the exit of Copse. This pushed them down to third….
Not a bad result for their first race. But they are hoping for a better result in the next race.
